Box Your Belongings for Better Storage in Your Gainesville Apartment

When you’re looking to store away your extra belongings, boxing them up is a smart way to keep them organized and protected. However, it’s easy to waste space and damage items if you just throw them into the nearest cardboard containers. Careful planning and having the right supplies will ensure you can keep your items undamaged and easily found while you maximize your storage space.

Planning is the first key to packing your boxes efficiently. Start by measuring your storage space with a tape measure and creating a diagram on graph paper. It’s also smart to measure the objects you’re planning to box, so that you can easily group similarly sized objects, and figure out the box sizes you’ll need. With these two pieces of information, you can create a detailed plan for how to both pack boxes and your storage space.

When it comes to actually boxing your possessions, there are a few supplies it’s useful to have, including:

  • Permanent markers
  • Masking or packing tape
  • A computer
  • A printer
  • Packing peanuts
  • A scale

While packing, be sure to weigh your boxes, both to ensure they’re moveable and that they won’t collapse the boxes below them. Be sure to fill in spaces inside the boxes with packing peanuts to provide extra cushioning and structural support, especially for those boxes that will be toward the bottom of a stack. While many people tuck box tops together to close them, sealing them with tape is a much more effective way, since the folds required for tucking can weaken the cardboard.

Using the computer to create a packing list for each box is a smart way to easily identify what’s in them. Give each box a number and record its contents using either a word processing or spreadsheet application on your computer, then write the number on the outside of the box. It’s also a good idea to print a copy of each box’s contents to put in with it, so you still have a copy of the information if you lose the file on your computer.

“We just moved in about a month ago. We had maintenance in so many times trying to get things set up for my disabled son - but they never complained. The grounds are beautiful. The people in the office are always polite and helpful. Very happy here.”
