Coping with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at Our Apartments in Gainesville, FL

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful, progressively worsening condition that is caused by the compression of a major nerve in the wrist. Doctors have not identified a single cause of this syndrome, but there are risk factors associated with the condition, such as experiencing a wrist fracture, diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis. It’s also possible that working in an occupation that involves vibrating tools or repetitive wrist flexing could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. The main symptoms of this syndrome are numbness and pain in the fingers and palm of the hand. As the pain grows more intense, it can cause frequent burning, tingling, and/or itching sensations; reduced grip strength, which makes it difficult to grasp objects or form a fist; and a wasting away of the muscles at the base of the thumb.

There are a variety of conservative treatments that can relieve the pain brought on by carpal tunnel syndrome, including:

    • Keeping the affected wrist flat against the mattress instead of tucking them under a pillow when sleeping
    • Icing the affected area for five to 15 minutes two to three times per day, to reduce the swelling and inflammation
    • Taking aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to reduce inflammation
    • Taking a break when the wrist, palm, or fingers start feeling achy by getting up and shaking out the affected hand
    • Wearing a splint, which will keep the wrist in a neutral position, can offer significant pain relief

Those who experience hand pain on a regular basis should consider seeing a doctor to diagnose the condition. If left untreated, carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to further weakening of the wrist and finger muscles, as well as a lack of coordination of the wrist and hand.

“We just moved in about a month ago. We had maintenance in so many times trying to get things set up for my disabled son - but they never complained. The grounds are beautiful. The people in the office are always polite and helpful. Very happy here.”
